Very few humans remain on Earth. When rebels are discovered, they are captured by Seekers - the closest thing to a police force the "souls" have. Once captured, they are prepared for implantation where a small cut is placed at the base of the skull and the "soul,” a centipede looking creature, is put in the body. The "soul" connects to the body and takes control. The first experience the "soul" has is the receiving of the host body’s memories. Typically, the host recedes and leaves the "soul" alone to continue life as usual. For Wanderer, this didn’t happen.
When Wanderer one of the souls is put into the body of Melanie Stryder, Wanderer expects it to be easy, take over her body and gain full control, be just like every other soul inside the other bodies, but Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away, making it difficult for Wanderer to gain full control of Melanie.
Usually the human, the host, just fades away, they're no longer in control and they dont know what's going on, but Melanie is fully aware of what's going on, she was one of the survivors when the Souls took over, running from them, but she was captured and Wanderer was put inside her.
As Wanderer can't gain full control of Melanie she takes to the challenge of finding out where the rest of the survivors are hiding, hoping to find them and put a soul inside of them.
As Wanderer probes Melanie's mind she come's across the memory of Jared, the man Melanie loved. Wanderer see's many memories of him, she relive the memories as if they were her's and soon Wanderer is falling for Jared, even though she never met him, but the force of Melanie's emotions and memories is enough to make Wanderer agree to run away.
Wanderer, still controlling Melanie's body runs away, only guided by Melanie's mind and memories. For all Wanderer knows she could be running to her death, but the overwhelming presence of Melanie's memories and emotions pushes her forward.
The story is amazing, it catches your attention from the very first page, and you really feel for Wanderer and Melanie, not sure who you want to agree with.
Wanderer who has to put up with Melanie, the anguish she's put through, as she feels everything, inside, the emotions of Melanie and on the outside the bruises and scars which she received. Wanderer was just a soul, doing her thing, doing what she was told to do, and now she has to deal with everything, but then on the other hand,
Melanie was caught and had a soul shoved into her, something which she would rather have died than have done. Melanie was trying to avoid this at all costs, and now that it's happened and she's still in their, but she cant control of her body, she cant speak or move, she's just a mind. She can communicate with Wanderer, but it's up to Wanderer what she'll do and say.
And then all of a sudden Wanderer starts falling for Jared, HER Jared and she cant do anything about it.
It's hard to choose which side! :) (Just like with Jacob and Edward in Twilight!)
This book is amazing, but i have heard from some people that read it that they did find it hard to get into, like it does drone on a bit, but just carry on with it! :)
